Following the Impromptus op. 29, 36, 51 (UT50058), the editor of the Polish National Edition of Chopin's works has published a further volume in this series, which comprises Chopin's complete piano works. Ekier was active in his home country as a scholar as well as a soloist and teacher. Artistic diversity and a profound knowledge of the music and the upper tradition of his compatriot Chopin characterized his editorial work and are ideally suited to the idea of the Wiener Urtext Edition as an Urtext edition for practical use. Despite the numerous authentic text variants - they represent the main editorial problem with Chopin - Ekier created a clear musical text; in the Critical Notes he laid bare the context of the sources and justified the choice of readings included in the musical text. The variants themselves are either given here or, in more important cases, as footnotes in the musical text. Ekier's experience as a teacher and soloist is recorded in the notes on interpretation.
