Kokkonen composed the Sonatina in 1953 for his own performance in his first composer's concert. It represents his early Neoclassical phase. The scoring is spare, frequently thinning out to the characteristic Neoclassical device of unison two octaves apart, while the backbone of the finale consists of broken fourth chords.
