The distinctive musical style of Patrick's father, Raymond Decancq, was difficult to classify under a specific genre. This was likely due to his profound knowledge of both classical and jazz music. Raymond's musical tastes were therefore broad and diverse. He also had a fondness for expressionist music, including works by Béla Bartók among others.

Raymond passed on his deep love of a wide variety of musical genres to Patrick. When Patrick composed a piano work for his father, he drew inspiration from the energetic rhythms and asymmetrical time signatures found in Bartók's music - without seeking to imitate the Hungarian composer.
