Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's "Württemberg Sonatas" - so named after the dedication to Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg, who had been Bach's pupil during his stay at Frederick the Great's court in Berlin - were published in 1744. Together with the "Prussian Sonatas" published two years earlier, the "Württemberg Sonatas" are the most significant manifestation of German keyboard music from the period between Johann Sebastian Bach and Joseph Haydn. They are among the most important works of keyboard art and clearly go beyond the sensitive and playful rococo style of the time.
The edition of the "Württemberg Sonatas", edited by Rudolf Steglich in 1928, is a prime example of how the various interests of scholarship and practice can be taken into account in one edition. The sonatas were long out of print - with this special edition, a new edition is now available.
