The publication by publisher John Stark of his memorable Maple Leaf Rag in 1899 marked the beginning of his success and codified the formal structure of classic Ragtime. Considered Scott Joplin's major work, it is rivaled today by The Entertainer, written by the same composer in 1902 and made famous in 1974 by the film "L'Arnaque". In The Entertainer, Scott Joplin attempts to enrich classical ragtime with a rhythmic-harmonic bass structure, and establishes motivic links between the different tunes, which at times, in the organization of the writing, seem extremely complex.
Even if ragtime obeys strict rules in tempo and rhythm, The Entertainer, with its dynamically enthusiastic tunes, exalts an incandescent flame in the performer's soul.
