Description:
Premiere: Rome/Italy, Palazzo del Quirinale, Cappella Paolina, October 19, 2025
In a Jazz Club Courtyard is the second movement from Urban Gardens for piano quartet. This movement takes place "in the courtyard of a jazz club", where the piano in the original version for piano and orchestra is mainly surrounded by woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments (in this version: the strings). The main theme is reminiscent of a blues-style ballad, but the movement also contains other elements, including a variation in which the piano part is in toccata style. The special ability of jazz to intertwine and transform everything becomes clear in the final section: the piano presents some short quotations from the classical repertoire, emphasizing the dialogue between the two worlds.
Binding: stapled
