The sequence of the pieces shows Schumann's striving for a symmetrical architecture of the cycle: the first piece "Eintritt" corresponds with the last "Abschied", the second "Jäger auf der Lauer" with the penultimate "Jagdlied". The third piece, "Lonely Flowers," is also thematically related to the third-to-last piece, "Bird as Prophet," since both depict living nature. The "Verrufene Stelle" as an uncanny place contrasts with the homely "Herberge". These pieces are grouped around the fifth piece "Friendly Landscape" as an axis of symmetry.
