Their debut album, Oh, Inverted World, was received with critical acclaim, and followed rapidly by a second release and then a third. Members of The Shins describe one of their career highlights as playing at the infamous Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 2006. Wincing the Night Away debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling a record-breaking 118,000 copies in its first week alone. The songs were featured on several movie soundtracks, including Garden State and Wicker Park.
