Description:
The Six Trios, Op. 6 / G. 89-94 (formerly published as Op. 9), edited by Wilhelm Altmann were composed in the 1770s by Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) during his years in Spain under the patronage of the Infante Don Luis. Written for two violins and cello, these chamber works often emphasize the cello - an instrument Boccherini himself played with great virtuosity. The work has a confusing publication history, with the set long circulated as Op. 9 before later scholarship reassigned it correctly to Op. 6. Wilhelm Altmann (1862-1951), an important German musicologist and librarian known for his chamber music editions and catalogues, helped reintroduce and clarify Boccherini's chamber works for modern performers through scholarly editorial work in the early 20th century. The Six Trios, Op. 6 / G. 89-94 still hold a respected place in the Classical chamber repertoire as a contribution to the development of the string trio tradition. Reprint edition.
