CALLIGRAPHY NO. 3 is based on an asymmetrical rhythmic cycle (called AKSAK), which is found in the folk music of Iran, Turkey, and other countries across the Near East. It is part of an ongoing series of chamber works composed by Reza Vali since 2000. The series explores the Persian modal system called the Dastgah-Magham.
