Description:
From Within is an original work for string quartet, dedicated to the Sonus Cordis String Quartet. As the title suggests, the piece explores an inner journey: it gives voice to what arises "from within," in music of intimate gestures that gradually awaken before gaining in intensity. The decidedly contemporary compositional style draws a rich palette of timbres from the four instruments. Melodic fragments, rapid runs, and rhythmic figures constantly shift from one voice to another, at times breaking free from strict synchrony, thus creating a dynamic, lively texture. The composer employs a wide spectrum of techniques and dynamics—from the softest whisper to the most vehement outbursts, from pizzicato to col legno—to craft a discourse of great expressive variety. Alternating between contemplative sections and passages of exuberant energy, *From Within* guides the listener through a series of contrasting atmospheres, ranging from reflection to exuberance. A challenging and captivating piece that celebrates the virtuosity and cohesion of a quartet.
