Description:
Josef Gabriel ab 1894 Rheinberger (1839 - 1901) was born in Liechtenstein. He came to Munich for musical training at the age of twelve and worked there as a composer and music teacher for the rest of his life. Rheinberger was a successful commission composer for choirs, among others. As court conductor to the Bavarian King Ludwig II, he occupied a central position within Catholic church music in Germany from 1877. He was an internationally renowned teacher of composition at the Munich Conservatory. His students included Engelbert Humperdinck, Joseph Renner jun., Lothar Windsperger, Wilhelm Furtwängler and others. Rheinberger received numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Munich.
