Description:
Lair of the Frost Giant is a homage to Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Heavily influenced by the Peer Gynt Suite especially the movement The Hall of the Mountain King. Although this is written for string quartet and not full orchestra, I wanted to exude the same power and vibe of a larger work.
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know The Hall of the Mountain King. The build up from soft pizzicato to forte is something I wanted to replicate. So powerful and engaging. The middle section explores a softer, melodic side only to return to previous themes. I feel the juxtaposition works well.
Peer Gynt is full of fantastical creatures and although there is no mention of a frost giant, he definitely could live in that universe. Enjoy!!!!
