String Quartet No. 2 – Lion’s Teeth by Sebastian Hilli unfolds an expressive world of sound that thrives on contrasts. Inspired by the origin of the word dandelion – dent de lion, the "lion’s tooth" –, the work stands in the field of tension between resilience and fragility. The lion's tooth serves as the central symbol: an inconspicuous plant that grows even under adverse conditions, returning year after year and constantly transforming itself. From the bright yellow leaves to the fragile seed head, the work reflects processes of growth, transformation and renewal. Childlike memories of scattering the seeds, often linked to a wish, evoke associations of hope, nostalgia and innocence. This is contrasted with images of sharp, powerful teeth of a desire and the hunt as an expression of survival. These contrasting qualities - tenderness and resistance, struggle and confidence, fragility and resilience - characterize the musical language of the work. The quartet is aimed at ensembles that are looking for contemporary chamber music with strong poetic content and clear emotional tension for their programs.
