With the 4th String Quartet op. 22, Paul Hindemith opens up new areas of expression and consistently develops his quartet art further. In five contrasting movements, the work combines contrapuntal density, rhythmic energy, tonal colourfulness and virtuoso instrumental treatment. Hindemith himself emphasized the new simplicity and clarity of the work, while contemporary critics particularly appreciated its richness of color and melodic and rhythmic inventiveness. After the successful premiere by the Amar Quartet, the work was quickly adopted by leading ensembles and is still part of the contemporary standard repertoire today. This edition is published for the first time after the text of the scholarly Paul Hindemith Complete Edition.
