George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) Gershwin, who was about 20 years old at the time, later claimed to have conceived the song in 1918 within fifteen minutes during a bus ride in Manhattan and then completed it in his apartment. It was partly intended as a parody of Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home". In 1920, Swanee was in the US charts for 18 weeks, nine of which were at number one. One million copies of the sheet music and around two million records were sold.
The song became Gershwin's first hit and also the most commercially successful of his career; the royalties allowed him to concentrate more on his work in theater and film from then on. Swanee was covered by a number of musicians and bands in the following years, including Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Dave Brubeck, Aretha Franklin and others. Swanee is not to be confused with Stephen Foster's "Swanee River" (actually: Old Folks at Home). While George Gershwin was working on the score for "The Goldwyn Follies" in Hollywood, he collapsed at the piano and died of a brain tumor at 10:35 am on July 11, 1937.
