Description:
Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Second Cello Concerto in 1966 in Crimea. It premiered at the Moscow Conservatory in September of that same year. As with his First Cello Concerto, Mstislav Rostropovich once again performed the solo part; he was accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR under Yevgeny Svetlanov. Compared to the First Cello Concerto, this three-movement work is more restrained and introspective. The form is more freely structured, featuring slow tempos, extended solo sections, and orchestral textures reminiscent of chamber music. Particularly striking is the use of percussion instruments such as timpani and the woodblock, which lend the work a distinctive timbre. The concerto belongs to the late phase of Shostakovich's career and reveals the composer's search for new forms of expression beyond outward virtuosity.
