Anfangs war Julie-O lediglich eine simple Melodie auf dem Klavier, die ihre endgültige Form und Gestalt gewann, als Mark Summer anfing, mit ihr auf dem Violoncello zu improvisieren. In seiner ersten Version als Werk für Violoncello solo (PON 1001) konzipiert, nahm er die Arbeit an Julie-O nach einigen Jahren wieder auf und erweiterte es zu einer Fassung für zwei Violoncelli, um zusammen mit dem Cellisten David Ying vom Ying Quartet davon eine Aufnahme einzuspielen. Die eher ungewöhnlichen Spieltechniken, die in diesem Stück Verwendung finden, sind dazu gedacht, den typischen Klang anderer Instrumente zu imitieren, so sind die Hammer-Ons und die akkordischen Pizzicati von der Gitarrentechnik abgeleitet, wohingegen das Slappen auf dem Griffbrett die typischen perkussiven Beigeräusche eines E-Basses nachempfinden soll. Summer benutzt diese Techniken, um dem Stück einen groovigen, d. h. sehr rhythmusbetonten, Charakter zu verleihen und starke Wechsel im emotionalen Ausdruck zu erzeugen.
