Description:
Jean-Baptiste Bréval (1753-1823) was a member of the Paris Opera Orchestra and a very active composer: his works include cello concertos, string quartets, comic operas and a school work for cello. However, he is best known for his op. 40/1, the present sonata in C major. It has become a classic of teaching literature, also in arrangements for other instruments. The two movements (Allegro and Rondo Grazioso) are also suitable for separate performances. The C major sonata is part of the basic repertoire for young cellists.
