Description:
The composer Emilie Mayer succeeded in doing what only a few female musicians of the 19th century were able to do: turn their skills into a profession and find recognition in the process. She dedicated twelve sonatas to the cello, the last of which is the D major Sonata op. 47 at the same time at the end of this great career as a composer. Just a few days before her death in April 1883, Mayer was still in contact with the publishing house Bote & Bock about the publication. The sonata has a melodic, romantic gesture. The figuratively moving piano part shows what an excellent pianist Mayer was. At the same time, the interaction between cello and piano is masterfully designed. The cellist and Mayer researcher Seonhwa Lee presents the first Urtext edition of the work on the basis of the first edition and the surviving autographs and also contributes a tried and tested designation for the cello part. The piano fingering is provided by Nicholas Rimmer.
