Description:
Leoš Janácek's only completed work for cello and piano is the "Fairy Tale" (BA09509). With this arrangement of his violin sonata for cello, cellists have another work by the composer at their disposal - a valuable addition to the concert repertoire for this instrument. The arrangement is by the renowned Czech cellist Jirí Bárta, who recorded the version for the first time together with the pianist Terezie Fialová (Animal Music label, 2024).
Bárta's approach to the arrangement is extraordinarily sensitive to Janácek's original. The violin part remains almost unchanged, taking into account the technical possibilities and timbre of the cello; in some passages the cello even sounds in the same register as the violin. For a particularly demanding passage in the fourth movement, the arranger offers an ossia alternative. Apart from an octave transposition, the piano part corresponds to the original.
The musical text is based on the Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leoš Janácek E/1-2.
