When you can finally play the Prelude from Bach's First Suite for solo cello in G major, you have made it: you have entered the great cello literature and at the same time found a companion for life, or at least life with the cello. There will hardly be a cellist who has not studied this work, which constantly offers new discoveries and challenges even to the advanced performer; it could be described as the most famous piece of cello literature of all.

Bärenreiter is presenting this single edition of Suite I as part of the publication of a series of popular works from its program for the 100th anniversary of the publishing house. The edition is an excerpt from BA00320 J. S. Bach, Six Suites for Solo Cello and has made history: published in 1950, it has remained one of Bärenreiter's most successful titles to this day. It was edited by the pioneer of historical performance practice, August Wenzinger, and provided with line markings and articulation indications.
