Complete Edition.

The extensive body of chamber music works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy includes six compositions for cello and piano, which form the content of this volume together with the corresponding sketches, drafts and versions. Mendelssohn composed the two large-scale sonatas in B flat major op. 45 MWV Q 27 and D major op. 58 MWV Q 32, two variation works in F major MWV Q 19 and A major MWV Q 21, an album leaf MWV Q 25 and a further one-movement piece entitled Romance sans paroles MWV Q 34. A special feature is the only partially preserved variation work MWV Q 21, which was written as a joint work with another composer and is presented here in its fragmentary form. The two sonatas in B flat major and D major are the central and most important pieces in the edition and are among the most important representatives of their genre in the 19th century. They were composed between 1838 and 1843 and thus belong to the composer's main creative period. It is remarkable that Mendelssohn had both sonatas published, while the majority of his duo sonatas for various instruments and piano remained unpublished. The autograph manuscripts of both sonatas are considered lost, so the edition is based on the first editions authorized by Mendelssohn.
