Description:
Sergej Rachmaninov's 'Elegy' Op. 3, No. 1 is the first of a collection of five pieces that were originally written for the piano in 1892. Rachmaninov dedicated this opus to his composition teacher Anton Arensky. Although early works, the pieces show all the hallmarks of Rashmninov's popular style. In these pieces there is an abundance of beautiful melodies that go hand in hand with supposedly simple harmonies combined with complex chromatics. The 'elegy' in particular has a unique wistful effect.
The idea of transcription developed out of the intention to expand the repertoire for double bass and to emphasize the 'vocal' quality of the double bass in particular.
The edition contains the piano part in D minor as well as in E minor. The double bass part can be played in both solo and orchestral tuning.
