Description:
Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio in C major, Op. 87, composed in 1794, occupies a special place among his early chamber music works. Originally written for two oboes and cor anglais, the work bears witness to Beethoven's early mastery of counterpoint, both in form and in instrumental interplay. Its particular form and balanced tonal structure made the composition very workable and led to numerous early transcriptions.
This edition presents a transcription of Op. 87 for double bass trio, an instrumentation that is both rare and underrepresented in the chamber music repertoire. The idea for this arrangement is to expand and enrich the available repertoire for double bass ensembles and to explore the expressive possibilities and technical capabilities of the instrument through engagement with a challenging classical work.
Transcribing a wind trio for a string ensemble - especially one consisting solely of double basses - requires careful and thorough consideration of register, articulation and balance within the ensemble. In the present edition, particular care has been taken to preserve the contrapuntal interplay and character of the original while making the necessary adjustments to bring out the full expressive potential of the double bass. Certain passages have been transposed or distributed among the ensemble in order to ensure the clarity of the composition and musical coherence.
