I originally wrote this piece for the Bern-based chamber music ensemble I Salonisti—two violins, cello, double bass, and piano. They recorded it on CD. I have since created several other versions: for string orchestra, symphony orchestra, and for viola and piano. The first movement is titled "Saudade," which means "longing" or "nostalgia." It is based on the older style of tango rhythm and expresses the melancholy suggested by the title. This is followed by "Carioca Linda," "the beautiful girl from Rio," a waltz whose rhythm is influenced by the jazz waltz, without actually belonging to that genre. The finale is a samba titled "Carnaval."
