Description:
Elegy by Juraj Filas is a deeply expressive work for two violas that explores the dark and warm richness of sound of this instrument, which is often associated with the human voice. In this intimate piece, the Czech composer unfolds a harmonic language characterized by lyricism and melancholy. The two viola voices intertwine in a sensitive dialog that is sometimes painful, sometimes contemplative. The composition emphasizes the velvety timbres and the violas' ability to sing in an inner, introspective register. One senses a strong spiritual dimension in it, which is characteristic of Juraj Filas' late style. The work seems to oscillate between devotion and lamentation, like a meditation on loss and memory. It is dedicated to Ladislavu Kyselákovi and Pavlu Cipryšovi and thus carries a personal note and the character of a homage. This dedication reinforces the human and emotional aspect of the score, which is conceived as a deep exchange between the performers. Thus "Elegy" proves to be a poignant piece in the repertoire for two alto violas of great expressive power.
