Description:
The three movements present different variations in which viola and piano can sound individually but also as a duo.
Lawrence Axelrod loves the viola, to which he dedicates this short sonata. Passages with recitative character alternate with those that fully exploit all possibilities of both instruments. A music that is equally interesting for listeners and performers.
The first movement contrasts bouncing figures with a more lyrical melody and a static but measured middle section. The second movement, 'Drones and Arpeggios', has a recitative-like section with minimal accompaniment and then simple ascending figures drawn from the piano chords. The recitative returns with the roles of the instruments swapped. The final movement is a strong, syncopated unison that develops into figures that jump from one instrument to the other. After a final rush, both instruments fade into their upper registers.
