Description:
César Franck's Sonata for piano and violin is one of the most highly esteemed works in the violin literature, a masterpiece of cyclical form - with its grace and expressive power, it is virtually paradigmatic of the era of musical Romanticism. The sonata was composed in 1886 and is dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.
After Franck's death, the original Parisian publisher of the sonata, Julien Hamelle, published further arrangements of the work in addition to the version for piano and violoncello (BA 10917) still authorized by the composer; however, no copy of the announced version for viola can be found today.
This arrangement for viola is therefore largely based on Jules Delsart's version for violoncello, but also includes extensive passages in the original register or remains in the middle octave, especially in passages where the cello is two octaves below the violin. In this way, the part in the alto register also alternates tonally between the two string versions and lends the sonata an appealing hybrid coloration beyond the violinistic brilliance and sonority of the cello. The piano part remains untouched and is identical to that of the original version.
