Description:
The Sonata for Viola and Piano, written in January 2023, is dedicated to violist Patrizia Messana. The focus of the three-movement work is on the extended first movement, the structure of which corresponds to the sonata form. Over the calmly flowing sounds of the piano part, the viola develops a lyrical theme in A, which is followed after a longer build-up by a dance-like second movement in 5/8 time. The first theme concludes the exposition. A bizarre fugato functions as the development, the recapitulation first takes up the second movement again and concludes with the main theme. The second movement is a contrasting scherzo with trio. The sonata ends with a very quiet ending, the melody of which once again takes up the main theme of the first movement.
