The Struwwelpeter (Slovenly Peter) book of poems was a 19th-century German collection intended to scare children out of bad habits. The macabre nature of these verses inspired Lowell Liebermann to set three of the poems for Soprano; Viola; and Piano; resulting in the Struwwelpeterlieder (Slovenly Peter Songs).
