Description:
Commissioned by the Karolina Blaberg Foundation, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; dedicated to Lawrence Power, who premiered the work in 2024.
Composer’s note:
"I wanted to write a grand concerto for this instrument, but I opted for a classical orchestra consisting exclusively of double wind and string sections. In this work, not even the timpani are part of the sound palette. There are also no other percussion instruments, harps, or keyboard instruments. In this respect, the concerto follows the approach of my Violin Concerto No. 1, which I orchestrated for a "Mozart"-sized orchestra. The piece is divided into three movements, which are played without pauses in between and thus share the entire musical material. I work with a variety of different characters, all distinguished by different harmonies, tempos, and textures, drawing parallels to the structure of my Piano Concerto No. 3."
