Description:
Maxim Jacobsen (1887-1973) was a Latvian violinist who studied in St. Petersburg and Berlin. Even before Hitler's seizure of power, he went to Milan and opened a music school. As a Jew, he was soon exposed to discrimination here as well. He applied to become a violin teacher at the Belgian royal court. After the German invasion of Belgium, his pupil Queen Elisabeth gave him papers and he fled to the south of France. Because he no longer had a valid passport, he was considered stateless and interned. He then emigrated to Portugal, where he spent the rest of his life. The Technical Paraphrases on Kreutzer Etudes were highly praised by the well-known violin teachers of his time (Flesch, Kreisler, Sevcik, Pollak and others). In Germany, they were not allowed to be printed for much longer due to Jacobsen's Jewish origins, but were still delivered by the English sub-publisher.
