Commissioned by Francesca Dego in memory of her father Giuliano and by the CIDIM Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica

For me, composition has always been above all a mosaic game. I like the artisanal, constructive, architectural aspect of it. But when people ask me to explain the mechanism, to reveal the secret of my work, I can't do it. Some musicologists have done this and presented me with astonishing analyses of my scores, showing how the relationships between the sections, the harmonies, the arrangement of the melodies follow a certain system with its own logic, a set of rules and a set of procedures. I am not aware of this, however, because for me composing remains an intuitive gesture in which ear and brain connect every day and then set my pencil in motion.

In order to begin a piece, however, I have to be moved. Not because I want to "express myself through music" - I leave that to the performers - but because this mosaic game, the Lego of composition, only works if there is that certain thrill at the beginning. Often it's an image, sometimes a story, sometimes an interpreter whose attitude, abilities and spirit I know. And then there are cases where the emotion comes from the encounter with a text, from words that hit me intuitively and instantly, settling in my heart and almost begging to be expressed through a piece of music.

This was the case with Io cammino muovendo le dita. In fact, the piece would not exist if Francesca Dego had not introduced me to a wonderful poem by her father Giuliano, which contains rhythm, beauty, intensity and - if you read it carefully - even something that resembles a little story. I can only be grateful to her, deeply grateful. And now I hope that some of it will reach your ears too.
