About "Por una cabeza" and Carlos Gardel (1887 - 1935):
The tango "Por una cabeza" was composed in 1935 for the musical film "Tango bar". The premiere was in July 1935 and shortly before, on June 24, 1935, Carlos Gardel and his lyricist Alfredo Le Pera crashed their plane in Colombia. Gardel became a national hero. The "Día Nacional del Tango" is celebrated worldwide on his birthday, December 11.
"Por una cabeza" can be translated as "For a head". It is about a gambling addict who was just as attracted to betting on horses' heads as he was to women. The minor theme of the 2nd part of "Por una cabeza" has its origins in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Rondo in C major KV 373 for violin and orchestra.
Instrumentation: violin and piano (optionally with over-part for a second melody instrument).
