Description:
The Sonata for Violin and Harpsichord op. 28 by Viktor Kalabis (1923-2006), one of the most important composers of 20th century Czech music, was written in 1967 at the suggestion of the violinist Josef Suk and the harpsichordist Zuzana Ružicková. The performers had commissioned Kalabis to write a composition that would be suitable for use in concerts with baroque, possibly classical repertoire, and the character of the work fully corresponds to this purpose. In the first two movements in particular, a tendency towards baroque musical conception can be recognized, especially in polyphonic structures. The music of the sonata as a whole impresses with its depth of content and is one of the composer's innermost and most essential works.
The dedicatees of the sonata, Josef Suk and Zuzana Ružicková, premiered it at the Prague Künstlerhaus (Rudolfinum) on September 23, 1968.
The present edition is a reissue of the first edition from 1970 (Supraphon).
