Description:
Prokofiev's Second Violin Sonata in D major op. 94a was composed in 1943-44, i.e. before the completion of his First Violin Sonata in F minor, the creative process of which lasted from 1938 to 1946. It is a transcription of the Flute Sonata op. 94 suggested by David Oistrakh, who himself had advised Prokofiev on this arrangement and provided him with numerous suggestions for a violin arrangement. In 1944, Oistrakh also arranged the premiere in Moscow together with Lev Oborin. Today, the sonata has firmly established itself as a popular addition to the violin repertoire. Our new edition of Sergei Prokofiev's Violin Sonata in D major op. 94a is based on the score of the first edition published by Muzgiz in Moscow in 1946. Minor discrepancies could be cleared up by comparing it with the violin part of the first edition and the score by Boosey & Hawkes (London 1946). The fingering of the piano part was done by the editor Heiko Stralendorff, the bowing and fingering of the violin part by Tomislav Butorac.
