Description:
Inspired by Béla Bartók's violin sonatas, Ravel planned his own sonata for violin and piano in 1922, but initially did not get beyond sketches. After several interruptions, the work was not completed until 1927, when it was dedicated to the violinist friend Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. With regard to the sparse, thinned-out movement structure and scoring, Ravel later pointedly claimed that the sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of violin and piano. Nevertheless, it has gained a regular place in the violin repertoire - not least because of its middle movement 'Blues' inspired by jazz elements. The fingerings of this Henle original edition were provided by two masters on their respective instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.
