The bells are meant to "ring out" all the negatives of life: dishonesty, pain, war, malice, greed for gold, and they are meant to "ring in" the "nobler ways of life", such as the love of truth and justice, peace, "the brave and free man, the larger heart, the more generous hand." II - What Passing Bells (Wilfrid Owen) This poem is a bitter critique of the horror and futility of war. The poet himself was killed in the trenches during the First World War at the age of 25. III - It Was a Lover and his Lass (William Shakespeare) This was intended by the author to be sung, as part of his comedy 'As You Like It'.
