The three songs for voice and piano in this volume were requested by Teresa Cahill for her singing students at Trinity Laban. The first, Where Are You Going To, My Pretty Maid? is an arrangement of a late Eighteenth Century song, in which a milkmaid rejects an offer of marriage from a mercenary suitor. The second, A Wise Old Owl sets a nursery rhyme text depicting the wisdom of keeping one’s own counsel. The third song, Under The Greenwood Tree, sets a text from Shakespeare’s As you like it (II.5) in which the character Amiens praises the simple life of the country and nature. It is included in F major (for higher voices) and D major (for lower voices).
