Description:
Ainadamar is the first opera by Argentinian composer OsvaldoIn Golijov and was premiered in 2003. Golijov tells the story of the playwright Federico Garcia Lorca and his muse Margarita Xirgu in the form of flashbacks and memories. He addresses Garcia Lorca's resistance to the Falange (a fascist movement in Spain in the mid-1930s), the accusations of homosexuality made against him and his violent death at the hands of the Falangists. "Ainadamar" is the Spanish name, derived from the Arabic "Ayn al-Dam", of a spring near which Garcia Lorca was executed ("Fountain of Tears"). With its sequence of arias, choruses and dance scenes and a main character portrayed as a martyr, this opera can also be interpreted as an oratorio or passion play.
