Carl Michael Bellman (1740 - 1795) is Sweden's most famous song writer. He had a friend and patron in King Gustav III of Sweden. A few years after the king was assassinated in 1792, Bellman also died, completely impoverished. The two most important collections of his poems are "Fredman's Epistles" and "Fredman's Songs". The lyrics are often humorous in nature and deal with what mainly drove him in life: wine, women and singing.
