Description:
The songs occupy a special place in the compositional oeuvre of Pfitzner's pupil Gerhard Frommel (1906-1984). As the composer wrote, his "entire oeuvre grew out of them slowly and organically". The predominantly tonal tonal language, their cantabile style that adapts to the poetic rhythm and the pianistically rewarding accompaniment hark back to the song tradition of the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, their distance from romantic absorption and exaggeration lends Frommel's songs their own austere and measured tone. The second and concluding volume of piano songs for high and medium voice contains the cycles and individual songs recognized by the composer, which are not yet included in the first volume (or only in a different version). Youth compositions from the early 1920s, which Frommel did not include in the catalog of works, are excluded.
