Description:
With this series, Southern Music Company initiates the first published collection of art songs set to music exclusively by American women. The songs span the whole of the twentieth century, and the majority of them are by living composers, with the notable exceptions of Amy Beach, Mary Howe, and Florence Price. All of the songs have been selected on the basis of poetic choice, strength in text-setting, and accessibility in performance. The Five Songs for soprano and piano (1986) was inspired by five poems of the Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca (1898 - 1936). I. El silencio (The silence), II. La mano imposible (The impossible hand), III. La luna negra (The black moon), IV. Las seis cuerdas (The six strings), V. Clamor. The English translation of the lyrics are also included to give the performer flexibility in performance.
