Description:
Als Hugo Wolf im Jahre 1888 die Gedichte von Eduard Mörike (1804-1875) vertonte, lag ein langwieriger Weg der Suche und Selbstfindung hinter ihm. Das Ergebnis war die Erkenntnis, dass die Poesie allein die Form und die musikalischen Ausdrucksmittel bestimmt und nicht traditionelle Kompositionsmuster. Mit den Mörike-Gedichten war er aus dem Schatten Schuberts und Schumanns getreten. So notierte er: Schubert höchste musikalische Potenz; Triumph der Musik über die Poesie. Seit Schumann die erste wahrhaft originelle und für die Entwicklung des Liedes bedeutsame Erscheinung. Schumann musikalischer Poet. Hervortreten der poetischen Unterlage aber noch immer fertige musikalische Form; - Wolf Poesie und Musik Eins. - ungetrenntes, soviel Musik als gerade in der Poesie. Kein Hinzuthun, alles aus dem dichterischen Gegenstand heraus schöpfend. Wolf sah sich demnach nicht neben Schubert oder Schumann platziert, sondern als Schöpfer von etwas Neuem. So beurteilt es auch die Musikgeschichte, die ihn mit den Gedichten von Mörike als den Schöpfer des neuen deutschen Liedes bezeichnet. Die Notiz enthält auch den Hinweis für den interpretatorischen Ansatz: Ausgangspunkt ist die Poesie und nicht die Musik. Aus Zwei muss Eins werden. (aus dem Vorwort)
