"I already knew the poem, but only now have I really understood it." - said an audience member after a concert about a poem by Hermann Hesse that I had set to music.
These and similar comments from the audience confirmed that I was on the right track. I wanted to compose good-sounding music to challenging texts. Be it to ancient prayers, such as Our Father and Hail Mary, or to poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Hermann Hesse, Matthias Claudius and Rudolf Otto Wiemer - which are like prayers to me.
I felt it was important that the music accompanied the text discreetly - with beautiful melodies that were easy to sing. In keeping with the zeitgeist of the texts - romantic, almost folksy.
