Description:
A musical treasure and a strong addition to the repertoire - not only for church services and sacred concerts!
Josephine Lang's "Lieder des Leids" based on poems by Albert Zeller (1804-1877) occupy a special place in her oeuvre in that Lang has not set any other poet's sacred texts to this extent. Contrary to what the title "Songs of Sorrow" might suggest, however, neither Zeller's texts nor Lang's settings are exclusively songs of lamentation; on the contrary, consolation, gratitude, trust in God and the joyful certainty of a reunion in the hereafter predominate in Lang's selection. In this way, they are an expression of Lang's strong faith, which remained unshakeable even in the face of the heaviest blows of fate.
Ferdinand Hiller (1811-1885), conductor, music journalist and a friend from his time in Munich, recognized in Josephine Lang's "Lieder des Leids" op. 29 a "special beauty of melody and [...] deepest expression". The edition now presented combines those already published during Lang's lifetime with the previously unpublished settings of the "Lieder des Leids". In this way, it is intended to provide a complete overview of this high-quality song group and make the songs accessible for practical performance use.
