The text is a reworking of an old Chinese poem that tells the story of a nobleman riding through a lonely mountainous region. Suddenly he sees a skeleton lying by the wayside. He stops and asks aloud who this person was and why the bones are lying there unburied. Was he a beggar? Was he murdered? To his astonishment, the bones begin to speak and tell the rider that they once belonged to a wise and successful man who died of natural causes. The narrator feels pity and offers to ask the gods to resurrect him. But the skeleton refuses: he explains that his life had been hard and tiring, but death had finally brought him peace and he does not wish to be reborn. This song was composed for voice, violin, double bass and piano, with the violin having an important dialog with the singer. However, there is also a version for piano alone, which can be used both for rehearsals and as an alternative concert version.
