Richard Strauss composed his youth songs with piano accompaniment from the age of eight and continued this work over a period of more than ten years. The edition impressively documents the artistic development of the young composer and shows a remarkable stylistic diversity – from simple, song-like miniatures to sophisticated works. For the first time, the edition presents a selection of these early songs that has been critically revised and provides revealing insights into the beginnings of Strauss's work. The range of content of the volume is expanded by previously unpublished manuscripts – such as the youth song Herbstabend.
