Description:
I wrote *Chicago Moves* in 2011 for the Gaudete Brass ensemble. The work consists of four movements, each of which highlights a facet of life in Chicago, embodied by a place or a landmark. The piece is a blend of Third Stream-style melodies—that is, situated between classical and jazz—set over an almost minimalist groove that is passed between the instruments. It makes extensive use of mutes, flugelhorns, and interwoven lines to create timbres more reminiscent of a string quartet or a vocal choir than those typically associated with brass instruments. The work was commissioned for Gaudete Brass by Giddings and Webster Mouthpieces, the Venzon family, Earl and Judy Baxtresser, and the Chicago Modern Brass Project.
